A PLA provides programmable AND and OR structures for sum-of-products logic. A traditional PAL has a programmable AND structure with a more constrained output-OR organization. A CPLD combines configurable logic blocks and programmable interconnect, making larger control functions practical.
Worked example
To implement F = AB + (NOT A)C in a PLA model, configure one product term for AB and another for (NOT A)C, then connect both to the output OR. If a second function uses AB, the architecture may permit sharing that product term.
What to watch for
These are architectural descriptions, not a guarantee about every vendor device. Product-term limits, output registers and routing resources vary by family.
Try it yourself
Which PLA structure forms product terms such as AB?
Answer: The AND structure. The OR structure combines selected product terms into output functions.
How to study this topic
Separate the ideal logical model from the physical device interface. Write units beside capacities, voltages and timing values. The architecture explains the idea; the chosen part's documentation supplies the operating limits.
