To implement an expression with gates, identify its intermediate operations and connect their outputs in the correct order. Each intermediate signal can receive a short name. This makes the circuit easier to trace and prevents a complicated expression from becoming an unreadable wiring diagram.

Worked example

For F = (A AND B) OR NOT C, use an AND gate for X = AB, an inverter for Y = NOT C, and an OR gate for F = X OR Y. With A = 1, B = 0 and C = 0, X = 0, Y = 1 and F = 1.

What to watch for

A drawn crossing is not automatically an electrical connection. Also account for real gate delays when the inputs change; a Boolean equation describes settled values.

Try it yourself

How many basic gates implement NOT(A AND B) directly using AND and NOT?

Answer: Two: one AND and one inverter. A single NAND gate implements the same function if NAND is available.

How to study this topic

Read one operation at a time and use parentheses generously. Check a simplification with every truth-table row, not just a convenient example. A useful simpler expression must preserve the complete specified function.
